LEXINGTON, KY — Transylvania University volleyball earned a five-set victory over Marietta College on Thursday night at the Clive M. Beck Center, defeating the Pioneers 25-21, 25-23, 13-25, 19-25, 15-11. The victory moved Transylvania to 5-8 on the season.
Transylvania jumped out to a two-set advantage, taking the opener 25-21 before edging Marietta 25-23 in a second set that featured seven ties and five lead changes. Marietta responded by taking the third and fourth sets to force a decisive fifth.
With the match on the line, Transylvania delivered its best offensive set of the night. The Pioneers put down 14 kills with just one attack error on 26 attempts in the fifth, hitting .500 to secure the 15-11 victory.
Addie Atcher led the Transylvania attack with a match-high 24 kills while committing just five errors on 49 attempts for a .388 hitting percentage. Cecelia Roberts turned in an efficient performance with eight kills and one error on 16 attempts to hit .438. Peyton Mast added 11 kills, while Payton Avilez finished with 10 and Logan Dunham added nine. Megan Sweeney led the Pioneers with 25 assists and added 11 digs, while Erin Thomas recorded 23 assists and 14 digs. Megan Helander paced the defensive effort with 19 digs and added eight assists, while Reece Houston contributed 14 digs.
Transylvania finished the night with 63 kills, 59 assists and 86 digs while hitting .200 as a team. The Pioneers were especially effective in the second and fifth sets, hitting .351 and .500, respectively. The match featured 19 ties and 12 lead changes.
