Katie Reyes

Katie Reyes is in her fourth season as head coach of the Transylvania field hockey team for the fall 2022 season.

Upon her arrival to Transylvania, Reyes quickly began putting her imprint upon the program, guiding the Pioneers to a two-game improvement from the previous season and engineering a Southern Athletic Association postseason berth. Reyes keyed the individual development of several Pioneers, led by SAA All-Second Team Selection Harper Zeitz. Zeitz and sophomore goalie Sidney Varney each earned SAA Player of the Week awards under Reyes’ tutelage.

Under Reyes, the Pioneers set the bar in a number of categories out of the gate; Varney led the conference in saves with 99 stops and ranked top-5 in the SAA in save percentage and goals-against. Both Lilly Kramer and Zeitz ranked top-11 in conference in goals scored as Reyes rekindled a Transylvania offense in her first season in Lexington.

In her inaugural 2019 season, Reyes fueled an all-around year of success for the Pioneers as 11 players were named to the D3 National Academic Squad; Tori Coleman and Audrey Denham were additionally named D3 Scholars of Distinction.

Going into the fall 2022 season, the Reyes-led Pioneers will look to show off their development from being a very young team in last year’s campaign. Under her, the Pioneers had two All-SAA award winners in 2021 as Makenna Saward was named First Team, and Libby Bringard was Second Team. Recruited and developed by Reyes, Bringard ranked second in the conference for saves per match as well as total saves, in just her first season of competition. Off the field, first year athlete Maddy Morgan was named to the NFHCA Scholars of Distinction List.

Reyes joined the Pioneers from NCAA Division III Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland, where she served as an assistant coach for the nationally-acclaimed program during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Reyes has brought a chiseled coaching philosophy to Transylvania that is rooted in leadership, culture, and cultivating a valuable student-athlete experience. She has a coaching background which spans multiple winning programs in Division III field hockey.

Before returning to Salisbury in a coaching capacity, Reyes spent the 2016 season with Division III Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania as an assistant coach. Spearheading team operations and recruiting efforts, Reyes helped the Presidents achieve a 15-5 record during the 2016 season.

Since 2014, Reyes has also held association with the USA Field Hockey Futures Program and is currently serving as an assistant coach for Region 9 in Louisville.

Reyes’ active coaching career follows a standout playing career at Salisbury which spanned from 2011 through 2014. Reyes was a team captain on the most recent Salisbury squad to appear in an NCAA National Championship game in 2013. Her playing credentials also include 2013 NFHCA All-Region Second Team recognition and an invitation into the 2013 NFHCA Senior Game. Reyes was selected to the Capital Athletic Conference All-Conference Second Team in the 2012 and 2013 seasons while at Salisbury.

“I am looking forward to helping transform the field hockey program here at Transy and working towards winning a SAA conference championship,” added Reyes. “As we work towards a unified ‘We over Me’ culture, I believe each player will thrive both on and off the field, in the classroom, and in the community.”
