Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. - Transylvania's
Chris Owens (Maysville, Ky.) and
Barrett Meyer (Frankfort, Ky.) combined to hit six of six free throws in the final 30 seconds Tuesday, leading the Pioneers to a 56-51 win over Centre in men's college basketball action.
Transy, playing for the first time in eight days, is 1-1 while the Colonels are 3-1.
The Pioneers held Centre to 32.1 percent shooting from the field while making 38 percent of their own attempts. Centre was just two for 15 from three-point range, compared to five of 13 for Transy.
Transy led by as many as nine points in the second half and kept the Colonels from regaining the lead over the final 20 minutes, although Centre closed to within three, 52-49, late in the game. Free throws by Owens, who had 11 points, and Meyer, who finished with seven, kept the Colonels at bay.
Freshman Ashley Hatfield (Pikeville, Ky.) had a career high 15 points to go with six rebounds to lead the Pioneers while Brandon Rash (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) added 13 points and four boards. Tate Cox (Hindman, Ky.) had eight points for Transy.
Josh Crawford was the only Centre player in double figures, finishing with 15 points, including 11 of 12 from the free throw line. Greg Ross had eight points and 13 rebounds for the home team.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early seven point lead less than four minutes into the game and led by three, 24-21, at halftime. Rash led the way with eight points and Hatfield and Owens added seven apiece.
The Pioneers held Centre to 25 percent shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes while making 41 percent (nine of 22).
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, hosting Wilmington at 7 p.m. at the Beck Center.
