LEXINGTON, Ky. - A second half surge by
Olivia Akridge (Eddyville, Ky.)and
Shayla Black (Mooresville, Ind.)proved not enough as Transylvania fell to Heartland Conference rival Hanover 63-59 Wednesday in women's college basketball play at the Beck Center.
Playing its Heartland Conference opener, Transy is 3-2, 0-1 HCAC, while Hanover is 4-0, 2-0 in league play.
With 10:40 remaining in the second half, Akridge scored seven consecutive points to bring the Pioneers from a four-point deficit to a three-point advantage. With 6:32 left, Transy trailed by four again until Akridge dropped in a layup, followed by a three-pointer by Black to put the Pioneers ahead by one.
Transy missed opportunities down the home stretch and four Molly Martin free-throws saw the Pioneer's trailing by four again. Black hit one last three at the 30-second mark, but the Pioneers couldn't come back as the Panthers posted a four-point win.
Akridge scored 14 second half points, finishing with 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Black shot three of four from behind the arc in the second half and finished with 11 points. Holly Milburn (Georgetown, Ky.)led the team with 10 rebounds to go with six points. Kennae Demus (Lexington, Ky.)added nine points and nine rebounds for the Pioneers.
Transylvania led in the rebound category with 44 to Hanover's 41, which translated to the Pioneer's 17 second-chance points compared to the Panther's eight.
Hanover was led by Martin who had 14 second half points, finished with 16 points and six rebounds. Behind her, Torin Franz who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, one short of a double-double. The Panther's stole the ball from the Pioneer's 13 times, leading to 18 points off turnovers. Transy only had 12 points off turnovers.
Hanover shot 18-23 from the free throw line, while Transy only netted three of their eight attempts.
The Pioneers entered the locker room trailing by six at halftime, 25-19. Transy shot only 26.5 percent from the field hitting nine of 34. Hanover made 26.7 percent of their shots, hitting only eight of 30 attempts. The Pioneers had one less turnover than the Panthers, 12 to 13 respectively. However, Hanover capitalized by scoring 10 points off of those turnovers to Transy's four points.
Demus led the Pioneers with six points and three rebounds in the first half. Milburn led the team in rebounds with seven and Akridge led in assists with four.
Hanover's Franz led with nine points and eight rebounds at half. Amanda Trambaugh chalked up two assists in the first period.
Transy stays in HCAC play in its next outing, traveling to Bluffton for a 2 p.m. contest.
