Holly Milburn (Georgetown, Ky.)paced four players in double figures Wednesday with 18 points as the Pioneers took a 65-64 win over Franklin in Heartland Conference women's basketball action.
Transy is 4-3 overall, 1-2 in HCAC play after snapping a two-game losing streak, while Franklin is 4-3, 1-2 HCAC.
Guard Olivia Akridge (Eddyville, Ky.)added 15 points and six rebounds for Transy while Shayla Black (Mooresville, Ind.)notched 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Kennae Demus (Lexington, Ky.)was also in double figures with 10 points.
Traci Lippold led Franklin with 18 points.
Franklin wiped out a late seven-point Transy lead, going up 64-63. But Akridge hit a jumper off an assist by Black with 15 seconds to play and the home team was unable to convert a last-second shot that would have given it the win.
The game was tied five times and there were seven lead changes. Transy shot 47 percent for the game, compred to 43.9 percent for Franklin, and the visitors were 13 of 18 from the free throw line compared to eight of eight for the Grizzlies. That helped off-set a 18-6 advantage Franklin held from behind the three-point line.
Transy also scored 20 points off of 14 Franklin turnovers.
The Pioneers shot 55 percent from the field in the first half and led by as many as 10 points before settling for a 40-32 advantage at intermission. Milburn had 11 points and five rebounds in the period while Demus and Black added 10 points each.
Franklin was also hot from the field in the first half, hitting 52 percent. Transy also had a 17-11 edge on the boards in the period and committed seven turnovers to 10 for the Grizzlies.
For the game, Transy outrebounded Franklin, 37-26.
Transy is back in action on Saturday, hosting Rose-Hulman at 3 p.m. in the Beck Center.
