Box Score HANOVER, Ind. - Transylvania got a season-high 21 points and seven rebounds from senior
Shayla Black (Mooresville, Ind.) Wednesday, but Heartland Conference leader Hanover still took an 87-71 win over the Pioneers in a battle for first place in women's basketball action.
Transy is 13-5, 8-3 HCAC, after seeing its seven-game win streak halted. Hanover increased its league lead to two games and improved to 16-1 overall, 10-2 HCAC. Hanover defeated Transy in the previous meeting of the teams in December, accounting for two of the Pioneers' three league losses.
Behind Black, Transy got 16 points from guard Olivia Akridge (Eddyville, Ky.) and 10 points and four rebounds from reserve Charli Fant (Glasgow, Ky.). Hanover held Transy's leading scorer, Holly Milburn (Georgetown, Ky.), to four points and two rebounds before she fouled out.
Hanover was led by Torin Franz, who had a game-high 28 points to go with six rebounds. Molly Martin contributed 18 points and 13 boards while Chelle Bentz notched 11 points and nine rebounds. Hanover shot 37 percent from the field compared to 38 percent for the Pioneers and had a 49-38 rebounding edge.
Hanover also forced Transy into 21 turnovers while making 15. Hanover was 26 of 32 from the free throw stripe compared to 17 of 23 for the Pioneers.
The Panthers led by eight, 49-41, at halftime but gradually built its margin to as many as 21 with just over seven minutes left in the game. Transy led only once, early in the contest.
Transy is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Rose-Hulman for a 1 p.m. HCAC matchup with the Engineers.
