Transy men hold HCAC lead with win over Defiance

Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky.- No. 25 Transylvania maintained its unblemished record at home and its perch atop the HCAC standings with a 75-62 win over Defiance on Saturday at the Beck Center.

The Pioneers (17-2, 11-1 HCAC) are a perfect 10-0 at home this season, and have won 22 of their last 24 games at the Beck Center overall.

"I thought our preparation and execution was very, very good," said head coach Brian Lane, "We've got a high comfort level at home and we played some pretty good basketball today."

Transy held Defiance (7-12, 3-9) well below their season average of 73 points per game. The visitors' frustration was demonstrated by Yellow Jacket head coach Kyle Brumett, who earned two technicals and an ejection at the 8:58 mark in the second half.

"We had much better defensive intensity this game than we did in our earlier matchup," added Lane, whose team fell 74-64 at Defiance in January. "We didn't look at it as a revenge game, but we didn't play as well as we could have up there."

Defiance had no answer for Transy's Brandon Rash and Ethan Spurlin, who scored 22 points apiece. The duo came into the game tied for fourth in HCAC scoring, at 16.7 points per game.

Ashley Hatfield had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench while Barrett Meyer popped in 10 points. Transy shot 49 percent from the field and canned 28 of 39 free throws. Defiance finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field and made 24 of 36 free throws.

Transy forced 14 turnover and outscored the Jackets 25-14 in points off miscues.

The Pioneers suited up at the Beck Center for the first time since Jan. 14, a 60-46 win over Rose-Hulman. Transy hosts HCAC foe Earlham on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

"We approach this next segment [of our schedule] as four home games out of the next five," Lane said. "It was great for us to be able to get a win today. Now we'll turn around and prepare for Earlham on Wednesday."
