FRANKLIN, Ind. - Transylvania battled back from a 12-point deficit Wednesday but unbeaten Franklin pulled away late for a 67-57 win in Heartland Conference women's basketball action.
The Pioneers are 4-8, 2-3 HCAC, while the Grizzlies, ranked 13th in the nation, lead the league race at 12-0, 5-0 HCAC. Transy came into the contest in a four-way tie for fourth in the conference.
Franklin appeared to be in control early, jetting to a 20-8 lead at the 9:51 mark. But the Pioneers would go on a 14-1 run, capped by a
Kayla Dobson jumper, to get a 22-21 advantage with 2:54 to play.
Transy led at the half, 26-25.
The Pioneers' last lead came on a
Nicole Coffman bucket at the 15:04 mark, making it 34-33. The Grizzlies then went on a 9-0 mini run to build a 42-34 advantage with 11:28 to play. Two Dobson free throws pulled the visitors to within four, 59-55, at the 3:14 mark, but Franklin clinched the game by scoring six in a row to go up by 10.
Jariana Gillespie led Transy with 18 points and three assists while Coffman added 15 points and six rebounds.
Alex McKenzie was also in double figures with 14 points and seven rebounds. Jessica Prewett led Franklin with 21 points while Sarah Condra added notched 16 points to go with 11 rebounds.
Franklin outshot Transy from the field, 47 percent to 34 percent. Transy was 20 of 28 from the free throw line while Franklin canned 23 of 30.
Transy returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Defiance for an HCAC matchup with the Yellow Jackets.
