Box Score DEFIANCE, Ohio - Ethan Spurlin poured in a game-high 27 points Saturday, but it wasn't enough to prevent Defiance from pulling a 74-64 upset of the 25th-ranked Transylvania Pioneers in Heartland Conference men's basketball action.

Transy falls to 11-2 on the year while suffering its first conference loss in six outings. The Yellow Jackets improved to 5-8 with their first HCAC win of the year.

Defiance led by as many as 14 points mid-way through the second half before Transy battled back in a game the Pioneers never led. Spurlin was seven of 12 from the field and 12 of 13 from the free throw line to come within a bucket of his career scoring high. The junior also had nine boards.

Brandon Rash added 16 points and two assists before fouling out. Barrett Meyer was also in double figures with 13 points, including three of seven from behind the three-point arch.

Transy shot 43.5 percent from the field (20 of 46) compared to 56 percent (23 of 41) for the home team. Both teams converted seven baskets from long range, but the Yellow Jackets took a 21-17 edge at the line.

Four Defiance players were in double figures, led by Logan Wolfrum and Travis Shomaeker, who each notched 14.

Defiance also had a 30-20 edge on the glass.

Transy cut the deficit to three points with 2:49 to play when Spurlin hit one of two free throws to make it 62-59. But Defiance went on a 10-3 run to grab a 10-point edge at the 46-second mark.

The Pioneers are back in action at the Beck Center on Wednesday, hosting HCAC rival Hanover at 7:30 p.m.
