HANOVER, Ind. - Wittenberg held Transylvania to 20 percent shooting in the second half Friday and the Tigers went on to a 64-54 win over the Pioneers in the women's basketball season-opener for both teams in the Hanover Classic.
Transy (0-1) was 17 of 62 for the game (27.4 percent), a total that included a six for 29 effort in the second half. That allowed Wittenberg (1-0) to hold on to a 36-29 edge forged in the first half.
Wittenberg shot 38.5 percent from the field for the game. The Tigers held a 24-3 edge in scoring from outside the three-point arc. Transy stayed in range by outscoring Wittenberg 19-6 from the free throw line. Wittenberg had a 46-42 edge in rebounding. Transy forced 26 turnovers while committing 21.

Nicole Coffman paced the offense with 15 points while newcomers
Madisen Webb and
Katelyn Smith each popped in 11. Webb and Smith each grabbed seven rebounds while Coffman had five.
Alex Botkin also had five rebounds in her college debute.
Jariana Gillespie had six points and
Brooke Colliver added four.
Amber Rice led all scorers with 21 points, but she was the only Tiger in double figures. Wittenberg's bench outscored Transy's by a 33-8 margin, which overcame the Pioneers' 29-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
Transy is back in action in the invitational on Saturday, taking on Adrian at 3 p.m. Adrian lost to host Hanover 76-66 earlier on Friday.
