BALTIMORE, Md. - Transylvania endured a cold-shooting night Friday and dropped its season-opening game to Catholic University 67-41 in opening round play of the Hoopsville National Invitational hosted by Stevenson University.
The sixteenth-ranked Pioneers (0-1) trailed the Cardinals (1-0) 36-18 at halftime after going the final 10:57 of the period without a point. Catholic expanded a 19-18 lead following a
Parker Stansberry three-pointer to 41-18 in the early part of the second half. Transy All-American
Ethan Spurlin broke the spell with a bucket with 16:43 to play in the game.
Spurlin and
Barrett Meyer each scored 14 points to lead the Pioneers, who shot 30 percent for the game (13 of 43), compared to 53 percent for Catholic (26 of 49). Transy was six of 24 from three-point range while the Cardinals were four of seven. Catholic outscored Transy 11-9 at the free throw line. Transy did have a 31-29 edge in rebounds, but the Pioneers committed 20 turnovers to nine for Catholic.
The Pioneers were hurt by the absence of junior point guard
Tate Cox, who missed the game with a knee injury.
Stansberry ended the game with six points in his first collegiate game and senior
Brandon Rash added four points. He now has 983 for his career at Transy.
Shawn Holmes led all scorers with 23 points and Chris Kearney added 18.
The Pioneers return to action in the invitational on Saturday, meeting No. 24 Randolph-Macon at 8 p.m.
