BALTIMORE, Md. - Transylvania senior guard
Nick Fudge canned a pair of free throws with just under two minutes to play Saturdayand
Brandon Rash went over the 1,000-point mark for his career as the Pioneers held off Randolph-Macon 56-54 in the Hoopsville National Invitational, hosted by Stevenson University.
The 16th-ranked Pioneers moved to 1-1 on the season while No. 24 Randolph Macon is 0-2.
After Fudge gave Transy the lead for good with 1:53 to play, the Pioneers forced Randolph-Macon into a pair of turnovers and a missed free throw. Randolph-Macon only got one shot off during the final minute and that was a miss at the buzzer.
Rash, who now has 1,004 points after scoring 21 Saturday, gave Transy a 52-47 edge on a pair of free throws with 4:41 to play. His jumper in the paint made it 54-50 with 3:25 to go.
Rash, who was named to the all-tournament team, is the 43rd Transy player to reach 1,000 points in his career. He also had eight rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Freshman
Parker Stansberry had 12 points and six rebounds while
Barrett Meyer was in double figures with 10 points to go with four assists, and three steals.
Next up on the 1,000-point countdown is Meyer, who now had 933 points.
Fudge's free throws were his only points of the game.
Transy trailed by three, 27-24, at halftime. The Pioneers were 21 of 54 for the game from the field for 39 percent while Randolph-Macon made 20 of 38 for 53 percent. Transy had a 30-23 edge on the boards and forced 22 turnovers while making just 15.
Connor Sullivan led Randolph-Macon with 17 points.
Transy is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Spalding for a 7 p.m. matchup.
