MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman
Matt Morgan pitched six innings of three-hit, shutout ball Sunday, gaining his first collegiate win and lifting Transylvania to a 10-2 win over Marvyille in college baseball action.
Transy (2-1) took two of three games in its season-opening series with the Scots, dropping Maryville to 6-4 on the year.
Transy scored single runs in the first and third and led 4-1 after seven. The Pioneers blew the game open with a six-run eighth inning rally. Transy finished the game with 10 hits, including two each by
Zach Bynum and
Sam Liggett.
Bynum had a double among his hits and Liggett drove home two runs and scored two more. Senior
Zach Muench had a hit and two RBI after slamming a home run on Saturday's 10-inning win.
Morgan walked two and didn't have a strikeout. He was followed by
Ryan James, who got two outs, and
Graham Winchester, who finished up by going two and a third innings, allowing four hits and a run with two strikeouts.
Transy is back in action on Thursday when the Pioneers travel to Danville to take on Centre in a 5 p.m. contest.
In Saturday's action,
Graham Winchester hit a 10th-inning sacrifice fly Saturday and
Zach Muench followed with a two-run homer, lifting Transylvania to a 5-2 win over Maryville and split a season-opening doubleheader with the Scots.
Maryville won the first game in seven innings, 3-1, despite a six-hit performance by three Transy hurlers. The Pioneers are 1-1 on the year while Maryville is 5-3.
Freshman
Jamie King got the start in the first game for the Pioneers, going two innings and allowing four hits and three runs, one earned. He was followed to the mound by
Shelby Dixon (three innings, two hits, no runs and three strikeouts), and
Nick Edwards, who went one inning without allowing a hit or a run.
Zach Muench and
Kevin Brinkman led the Transy offense with two hits apiece, while
Zach Bynum got the team's lone RBI, scoring
Zach Riney in the third. Neither team scored over the last four frames.
In the second game,
Taylor Bugh started for the Pioneers and shut down the Scots for five innings, allowing three hits and a run.
Danny Niehaus went four innings, giving up a run on two hits. He collected the win after Transy rallied in the 10th.
Ryan James got the final three outs for the save. He escaped a two-out, bases-loaded jam by getting the final out on a grounder to short.
A walk and a single, sandwiched around a sacrifice and a stolen base put two Pioneers in scoring position in the third inning and
Ken Riley brought both home with a single up the middle. Maryville got one run back in the sixth and tied it in the eighth.
Johnny Renz singled to lead off the 10th and
Hunter Voshell reached on an error. Both advanced on a sacrifice. Winchester's fly ball scored one run and Muench's first homer of the year brought in two more.
Transy scored five runs on five hits and were helped by four walks and an error.
The two teams will complete their season-opening series on Sunday, playing a single game at noon.
