LEXINGTON, Ky. - No. 15 Transylvania maintained its lead atop the Heartland Conference and its perfect record at home with a 67-58 win over Mt. St. Joseph on Wednesday at the Beck Center.
The Pioneers hold a two-game lead over Hanover in the race for the HCAC title and the right to host the conference tournament on Feb. 24-26. Transy is also a perfect 12-0 at home this season.
Barrett Meyer led the Pioneers (20-2, 14-1 HCAC) with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting. He made four of his six three-point attempts and also pulled down four rebounds.
"Barrett really got us going," said head coach
Brian Lane. "He really helped us respond the way we needed to after the first half."
All-America candidates
Brandon Rash and
Ethan Spurlin were also solid. Rash scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and Spurlin added eight points and eight rebounds for the Pioneers, who led 24-21 at halftime.
"We certainly got off to a slow offensive start," said Lane. "I thought Mt. St. Joseph did a nice job defending us. It really helped that we were able to hold them to 21 first-half points."
A total of 14 Pioneers saw action in the first half, with 11 logging five minutes or more.
"I thought we struggled with finishing inside early," Lane added, "so we went to the bench, and got some great minutes out of them."
Transy shot a blistering 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the floor in the final 20 minutes, hitting 5-of-7 three pointers and 16-of-18 free throws.
Mt. St. Joseph (7-15, 3-12), coached by former Transy assistant Toby Carrigan, was led by David Lane and David Mann, who each scored a game-high 20 points.
"We answered the way we needed to," Lane added. "It wasn't the prettiest game, but we'll certainly take it."
Winners of eight in a row, Transy reached the 20-win plateau for the fourth time under Lane's guidance and in the fewest games. The Pioneers are seeking their first HCAC title -- and the right to host the conference tournament -- since 2009.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they host Manchester at 3 p.m. Transy seniors
