LEXINGTON, Ky. –
Sam Liggett hit his first homer of the year Saturday and
Zach Bynum added two hits and scored three times, leading Transylvania to a 7-4 win over Anderson and a split of a Heartland Conference doubleheader at Marquard Field.
The Pioneers are 6-8, 1-1 HCAC, while the Ravens are 8-6, 1-1 in league play. Anderson rallied for a 5-2 extra-inning win in the first game.
Taylor Bugh (2-1) cruised into the seventh and final inning of the second game with a 7-0 lead after having allowed just five Anderson hits. He was touched for a one-out grand slam, accounting for the visitor's entire offense for the game, before coming back to fan the last two batters of the contest.
Bugh finished the game with a seven-hitter, striking out three and walking one.
Johnny Renz had three hits, good for a run and an RBI for the Pioneers, while
John Michael Cowley added two hits and a pair of runs batted in.
Transy grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first, then made it 3-0 in the third before putting up two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Liggett's homer came leading off the fourth.
In the first game of the day, Transy forced an extra inning when
Ken Riley opened the bottom of the seventh with a double, took third on a sacrifice, and scored on
Kevin Brinkman's hustle double to centerfield.
That tied the game at 2-2, but Anderson struck four three runs in the eighth, getting two on a home run.
Chris Bloch (1-1) went seven innings and allowed five hits and three runs. He struck out two and walked one and left the game after hitting the lead-off batter in the eighth.
Ryan Troehler followed and gave up a home run before
Danny Niehaus got out of the inning, getting a strikeout and allowing a run.
Riley had two hits and scored a run and
Zach Muench also contributed a double to the attack.
Sam Liggett added a hit and an RBI and
Johnny Renz had a hit and scored a run.
The Pioneers and Ravens conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game, beginning at 9 a.m. at Marquard Field. Transy hosts another HCAC rival, Hanover, on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
