LEXINGTON, Ky. - Rose-Hulman rallied from a four-run deficit Saturday to take a 5-4 win over Transylvania, completing a sweep of a Heartland Conference doubleheader at Marquard Field.
Transy (15-16, 8-9 HCAC) carried a 4-2 edge into the top of the eighth inning in the second game after scoring three in the first and another in the second. Senior right-hander
Taylor Bugh (5-2) had permitted just two runs on six hits going into the frame.
Bugh had 10 strikeouts in the game against just walk.
Shelby Dixon came into the eighth with two outs and the scored tied at 4-4. With a runner on second, Dixon gave up an RBI single before getting the last out of the inning. He retired the side in the ninth, getting two strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman (22-8, 13-3 HCAC) used three pitchers to hold Transy to eight hits.
Ken Riley was three for three for the Pioneers, including a double.
Zach Muench had a single and a double and drove in a run.
Zach Bynum and
Sam Liggett also drove in runs for the Pioneers and
Graham Winchester had a hit and scored.
Bynum's double drove in Winchester with Transy's run in the second inning.
The Pioneers lost to the Engineers 9-1 in the first game played under dark clouds and windy conditions. The temperatures hovered in the mid 40s most of the afternoon.
After Riley's RBI ground-out gave Transy a 1-0 lead in the first, Rose-Hulman came back with three runs in the second inning, then scored two runs in each of the next three frames.
Transy finished with five hits, two by Bynum.
Chris Bloch (3-3) went five innings and allowed 13 hits, and eight earned runs. He struck out three and walked two.
Elliot Desilets and
Matt Morgan each pitched a scoreless inning.
The Pioneers and Engineers conclude their three-game set Sunday at Marquard Field with a single contest at noon.
