FRANKLIN, Ind. –
Madisen Webb and
Nicole Coffman each netted 18 points Wednesday, powering Transylvania to a 59-53 win over Franklin in a battle for Heartland Conference women's basketball lead.
The Pioneers (14-4, 10-1 HCAC) came into the contest with a one-game lead over Franklin (14-4, 8-3 HCAC). The Grizzlies handed Transy its only HCAC loss of the year on Jan. 2 at the Beck Center. Transy has now won six straight games.
The Pioneers scored the first five points of the game and led 30-26 at the break behind 11 points each from Coffman and Webb. The five-point cushion would prove to be the largest lead for either team in the first period. Franklin would come back to lead by three, 17-14, with 8:16 to play.
But Transy ended the half on 16-9 run. The Pioneers shot 52 percent in the first half, compared to 31 percent for the Grizzlies. The home team's shooting effort included missing all 12 of its three-point attempts.
Transy never trailed in the second half, building leads of as many as 12 points on two occasions. The first came on a three by
Katelyn Smith, which made is 42-30 at the 13:38 mark.
Coffman's two free throws made it 44-32 two minutes later.
Webb also had six rebounds while Coffman added five. Smith was also in double figures with 10 points. Transy finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field to 34 percent for the Grizzlies. Franklin ended the evening making two of 21 from long range compared to five of eight for the Pioneers.
Katie Dale and Jess Prewett each scored 11 point to lead Franklin.
Transy is back in action on Saturday, when it meets Defiance on the road in a 1 p.m. contest.
