SPRINGFIELD, Ohio â€" The shots wouldn't fall for Transylvania field hockey on Wednesday, as they fell to opponent Wittenberg, 3-0.
The Pioneers put up a strong defensive fight in the first half, blocking five shots on the Transylvania goal, while junior goalkeeper
Sara Aschbacher played her part, netting nine saves. After an impressive 34 minute battle, a lucky shot by Wittenberg's Andrea Mattingly with just a second left on the clock rolled into the Pioneer cage, giving Wittenberg a 1-0 lead at the half.
Wittenberg applied the offensive pressure in the second period, taking six shots in the first four minutes, each of which was blocked or saved by the tough Pioneer defense. But, it was a penalty stroke awarded to the Tigers that made the difference, as they netted their second tally of the night to lead 2-0.
Of the remaining 17 shots taken on the Transylvania net, only one more made its way through at the 47-minute mark, putting the Tigers up 3-0.
The last three minutes of game play saw a Pioneer offensive push on the Tiger goal. Four Pioneers attempted shots, but none could crack the Tiger defense before the end of regulation.

Aschbacher totaled 20 saves in the loss.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they face conference foe Rhodes at home.
