Pioneers drop close decision to Maryville, 86-78

Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky.-  An outstanding game for the Pioneers had a heart-breaking finish, as Maryville College stole a last-minute win on Saturday, 86-78.

"We led most of the game against an excellent team," said Head Coach GregTodd.

The Pioneers soared ahead of Maryville in the first half. After tipoff, junior Nicole Coffman scored a jumper to put the Pioneers on the board.

Two layups by sophomores Katelyn Smith and Alex Botkin brought the lead to 6-3. Smith scored the game's first 3-point shot, and another layup, pulling Transylvania further ahead to 11-3.

The Pioneers had a 12 point lead after Coffman scored a jump shot in the paint, giving Transylvania a 13-point cushion. But, it didn't last long.

The lead dwindled as the Scots netted nine unanswered points, bringing the teams within four with less than eight minutes remaining in the first half.

The Pioneers pushed the lead to eight, but Maryville continued to claw back. The Scots connected on a pair of three-pointers and several free throws, giving Transylvania a narrow one-point lead at the half.

Despite the strong start, the second half became a struggle, as Maryville shut down the Pioneers in the paint and pressured the team into giving 11 points to the Scots off turnovers. The Pioneers managed only eight points in the paint in the second half, compared to 18 in the first half.

Maryville poured on the defensive pressure, resulting in multiple Pioneers turnovers, dwindling the lead to a 75-75 tie with 2:24 on the clock.

Fouls downed the Pioneers in the stretch, as Maryville went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final 46 seconds, taking the 86-78 victory.

The trio of Coffman, Smith and Fender made an impact in the offense, netting 22, 19, and 11 points, respectively. Botkin made an impressive effort on the boards, just one-point shy of a double-double, recording 15 rebounds and nine points.

"We played a national caliber team and didn't back down," said Coach Todd. "We played better than last night and more players had positive contributions. We will continue to get better through practice."

The Pioneers finished the Besuden Classic with a record of 1-1, tipping off next at home against Spalding University at 3 p.m. on November 30.
