Pioneers defeat Hendrix, advance to SAA semifinals

Box Score DANVILLE, Ky.- Transylvania field hockey routed Hendrix on Friday evening, 3-1, to earn a spot in the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament.

Transylvania came out swinging, putting on the offensive pressure and handily controlling the momentum in the first half.

Sophomore Kayla Thurlow nabbed the game's first tally for the Pioneers just 15 minutes into the match. This season, Thurlow has recorded a tally of seven total goals this season and managed a shot percentage of .500. She is also one of the Pioneer's leaders in shots-on-goal percentage, with 78 percent.

At the 30-minute mark, freshman Shelby Perkins gave the Pioneers a two-point advantage, netting a goal off an assist by sophomore Maddie King.

Two additional shots were taken on the Hendrix cage in the remaining minute of play, but were both saved by Hendrix goalkeeper Gabryele Pchron, sending the Pioneers into the locker room with a 2-0 advantage at the half.

It was clear an adjustment had been made on the Hendrix strategy as minutes into the second Hendrix displayed an agressive, challenging attack.

Two minutes in, Hendrix's Jennife rKoller scored their first and only tally of the match.

It didn't take long for Transylvania to respond. Eight minutes later, a cross by Perkins to junior Macaulay Schifferdecker found the back of the net, her seventh of the season, bringing the score to 3-1.

The Transylvania defense, led by junior Sara Aschbacher, became impenetrable in the final minutes, saving or blocking five shots on goal, launching them into the SAA semifinals.

In the SAA conference, Transylvania holds the top spot in shot on goal percentage with 76 percent, and the main advantage for shot percentage with 0.2.

The No. 4 seed Pioneers look to upset the No. 1 seed and in-state rival, Center College, who is playing on their home turf this weekend.

The game will begin at 12 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, November 9.
