Fender nets career-high in Pioneer win over Pacific Lutheran

Box Score SCOTTSDALE, Arizona - Freshman Jordin Fender netted a career-high 18 points off the bench in the Pioneers' 63-52 win over Pacific Lutheran in game one of Transylvania's Scottsdale Shootout.

Fender went 6-for-10 from the field and 6-for-8 from the foul line in her 30 minutes off the bench. She also tacked on five rebounds, four steals and one assist in her. Her performance was matched point-for-point by junior guard Nicole Coffman who added 18 points, three rebounds, five steals and four assists. Sophomore guard Katelyn Smith and freshman guard Hannah Neely tacked on 12 and 10 points to the Pioneer victory, respectively.

Pacific Lutheran jumped out to an early lead, netting 13 points to the Pioneers' two in the first four minutes of the contest. Transylvania managed only a 22 percent shooting percentage, goign 7-31 in the first half. With 8 minutes remaining in the first, the Lutes had managed a 12-point cushion, leading 20-8 over the Pioneers.

Down double-digits, Transylvania kicked the offense and defense into high gear. The Pioneers' went on a 14-2 run, thanks to Coffman, Smith and Fender, tying the contest at the 3-minute mark, 22-22.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by the Lutes' Megan Abdo and Shelly Kilcup haulted the Pioneer run only temporarily, as Transylvania responded with five points, keeping the game within one. A last-second layup by the Lutes sent the Pioneers trailing into over time by three, 30-27.

Thanks to an upsetting full-court pressure, the Pioneers managed 11 points off turnovers in the first half to the Lutes' five, also finding a majority of their points (14) in the paint.

It was clear the Pioneers' took the court with a win on their minds. Transylvania netted the first seven points in the first two minutes of game play off a 3-point basket and jumper from Coffman and layup by sophomore Alex Botkin.

It was Neeley who would make an impact in the second, making her appearance at the 9-minute mark and making two back-to-back 3-pointers in her first 40 seconds on the hardwood. The fast-paced scoring spree gave the Pioneers a quick lead from which they'd never look back. The lead would dip to only 10 points in the final five minutes, as fouls and turnovers would eventually down the Lutes in the stretch, 63-52.

The Pioneer's defensive pressure upset the Lutes for the majority of the night, forcing 17 turnovers and managing 24 total points off 29 Pacific Lutheran turnovers. It was Pacific Lutheran, however, than won on the boards, grabbing 57 rebounds to Tarnsylvania's 38.

The win sends Transylvania to the championship matchup of the Scottsdale Shootout, facing Southern Maine at 8 p.m. EST on Monday.
