Aggressive defense smothers Ravens in 90-58 Pioneer win

Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. â€" A physical full-court press smothered the Anderson Ravens on Saturday, as Transylvania women's basketball notched their tenth win of the season, and remained unbeaten in conference play, 90-58.

The Pioneers forced 26 Raven turnovers, converting those into a whopping 37 points, the most this season. Eight players combined for 15 steals to Anderson's two.

"We were pleased with our full-court pressure today," said Head Coach Greg Todd. "We played hard overall. I give Anderson credit. The game was much closer than final score indicated."

Sophomore Katelyn Smith led the Pioneers in scoring with 21 points, followed by junior Nicole Coffman with 20, senior Madisen Webb with 15. Junior Alex McKenzie recorded her third double-double of the season, netting 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in her 24 minutes of play.

Momentum was on Transylvania's side early in the first half, as the team went on an 11-0 run through the first five minutes of the contest. Anderson's first baskets of the matchup came at the 15-minute mark off two free throws from a Transylvania foul.

The shots weren't falling for Anderson, as they missed four consecutive basket attempts, but finally found their first field goal at 13:44, with Transylvania leading 11-4. The Pioneers refused to let their foot off the throttle, smothering the Ravens in full-court defensive pressure.

With 8:41 remaining before the half, the Ravens found a small outlet. In 30 seconds, Anderson managed to net two back-to-back 3-point jumpers and a soft shot from the paint to pull the game within four, 20-16.

But, Transylvania responded.

Within four minutes, the duo of Coffman and McKenzie had stretched the Pioneer advantage back to ten, 28-18. At the half, Transylvania managed to maintain an eight-point advantage, 34-26.
The Pioneers took advantage of their numerous trips to the foul line in the first, going 13 of 16 from the charity stripe compared to the Ravens' 3 of 6.

Despite the effort, it was an uphill climb for the Ravens from that point forward.

Transylvania dominated the Ravens in the second half, going 5-8 from free-point land, and hitting a notable 94 percent from the free throw line. The Pioneers beat the Ravens on the boards, 22 to 15, and forced 13 additional turnovers and eight steals.

By the 11-minute mark, the Pioneer double-digit lead was solidified by Smith, and would grow for the remainder of the contest.

Transylvania widened the cushion to 36, the largest of the contest, with 51 seconds remaining in regulation, sealing the 90-58 win.

Turnovers, which hit double-digits for the Pioneers early in the season, were in single digits for only the second time, a statistic which Coach Todd found as a positive sign of his team's improvement.

"We are starting to get some games with more assists than turnovers," said Todd. "We can consider ourselves a good team when that happens."

Coffman was also honored at the half with a game ball and plaque for joining the 1,000 point club in December's Pat Deacon Classic matchup against Midway.

The Pioneers take on the Hanover Panthers on Wednesday at Hanover at 7:30 p.m.
