Rhodes' stingy defense helps lift Lynx over Pioneers

Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Against one of the nation's most efficient defensive units, the Transylvania University field hockey team fell, 7-1, Sunday in a Southern Athletic Association matchup.

Two early goals from Rhodes gave the Lynx an advantage early and added to the challenge of finding the net against one of the nation's best defenses. Rhodes leads the nation in save percentage (.913) and ranks third in goals against average (0.54) and entered the contest with a mere seven goals allowed on the season, along with three shutouts.

However, the Pioneers appeared to be unphased. After the Lynx gained an early 2-0 lead less than five minutes into play, the Pioneers continued to attack. Rhodes added two more goals in the first half building a 4-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The Lynx scattered three more goals over the first 26 minutes of the first half yet, facing a 7-0 deficit, the Pioneers refused to quit. Transylvania's continued efforts were awarded with a goal from Sara Clark in the 66th minute, her second of the season. Maddie King found Clark on the inbounds, allowing Clark to fire one toward the cage that found the net and put the Pioneers on the board.

The Pioneers take a break from SAA action and will travel to Wittenberg on Oct. 15 with the game scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
