Women's basketball overcomes Grizzlies, 72-54

Box Score FRANKLIN, Ind. â€" The Pioneers stayed cool under pressure Wednesday night, fighting off the pesky Franklin Grizzlies to stay undefeated on the road, 72-54.

"We had a great team focus tonight," said Head Coach Greg Todd. "We played smart on defense and rebounded well."

Junior Nicole Coffman continued her scoring dominance, netting an impressive 30 points, just one point off her season high. Junior Alex McKenzie was one point shy of grabbing her second double-double of the year, pulling down a team-high 13 rebounds and hitting nine points. Senior Madisen Webb and sophomore Katelyn Smith also contributed on the offensive end, netting 12 and 11 points respectively.

The opening minutes of play proved to be an indicator of the half ahead. The Grizzlies took little time jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the opening minutes, but the advantage wouldn't last long. Transylvania's first points were put on the board by Coffman, who single-handedly tied the contest after netting a long 3-pointer and soft jumper just moments later to tie the game, 5-5.

The momentum shift gave the Pioneers a 13-2 run to lead by six with 15 minutes left in the first half. Franklin's accurate shots and defensive press, which forced a Pioneer turnover, became a challenge. By the 9-minute mark, the Grizzlies had cut the Pioneer advantage to one, 17-16.  But, with the composure witnessed multiple times over the course of the season, Transylvania responded.

In three minutes, Transylvania's offense had created a 9-point cushion, thanks in part to impressive work by McKenzie, netting two layups and a critical rebound off a missed Franklin 3-point attempt.

The see-saw first half, however, wasn't over. Franklin would attempt one more rally before the half, cutting the deficit to two with three minutes before the buzzer, but couldn't keep the Pioneers at bay. Again, Transylvania rebounded back, stretching the lead back to seven, 37-30, before heading to the locker room.

Unable to put the Grizzlies to bed, Transylvania came out in the second attacking the basket, pushing the advantage to a quick 10 points just two minutes in. This time, Franklin couldn't find the offense to respond. By the 12-minute mark, the Pioneers began sailing, increasing the advantage to a game-high 21 points with 40 seconds on the clock, solidifying their 72-54 victory.

Though posting many identical stat lines, Transylvania's explosion in the second half was partially due to points off turnovers, as they recorded 12 points from Franklin errors, compared to the Grizzlies' two.

Transylvania travels home for Senior Day on Feb. 15, facing Defiance at 1 p.m. in a double-header with men's basketball at 3 p.m.
