Webb nets second triple-double in Pioneer victory over Ravens

Box Score ANDERSON, Ind. â€" Senior guard Madisen Webb's standout triple-double performance and the Pioneers' confident scoring netted women's basketball their 19th win of the season Saturday in an 85-66 victory over the Anderson Ravens.

Webb recorded her second triple-double of the season, and only second of the last decade. Leading the team in rebounds and assists, Webb recorded 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in her 36 minutes on the hardwood. Sophomore Kayla Dobson followed in rebounds with five.

The trio of Webb, junior Nicole Coffman and sophomore Katelyn Smith dominated the afternoon, as Head Coach Greg Todd's proclaimed "three-headed monster" combined for 68 of the 85 points on the day. Smith led in scoring with 25 points and seven rebounds, followed by Coffman with 22 points, five rebounds, and four steals.

Though the Ravers were neck-in-neck in many categories, it was Transylvania's poise in critical moments and offensive aggressiveness in the paint that solidified the win. The Pioneers managed 38 points in the paint to the Ravens' 12, forcing them to shoot from the perimeter thanks to their overshadowing defense.

"I felt our offensive game improved as the game progressed. We passed & shot the ball well to be on the road," said Head Coach Greg Todd. "Anderson shot the three ball well and made it tough to guard them. It was a closer game than the final score indicated."

Transylvania's first points were put on the board by Coffman, netting two quick free throws in what would be a foul-heavy contest. The points came easy for the Pioneers in the opening minutes, but the Ravens kept pace. With 9:06 left in the first half, a layup by Webb gave Transylvania an eight-point advantage, 23-15.

For every shot the Ravens would net, the confidence of the Pioneer offense would respond, knocking down two to carry the advantage. By the five-minute mark, the Pioneers had gained their largest lead of the contest, 33-21. A 3-point jumper by Anderson, cut their lead into nine, but Webb would respond by sinking a pair of free throws. The trend continued, as the Ravens struggled to gain an offensive foothold against the Pioneers when down by only single digits.

A bullet pass from Webb to junior Alex McKenzie, when went in for a baseline layup, pushed the Pioneers to 11 with two and a half minutes remaining in the second. Transylvania locked down the Ravens in the remaining minutes, giving up only one shot from the charity stripe before the halftime buzzer, leading 38-28.

At the half, Webb had already managed 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. The team's impressive defense had created five steals, to Anderson's zero, and forced 10 Raven turnovers.

The second half was owned by the Pioneers. In the opening minute, a jumper each by Dobson and Smith quickly pushed the Pioneer cushion to 14, 42-28, a lead that would rarely dwindle for the rest of the contest.

With 9:43 remaining, the Raven's final chance to chip away at the Pioneer lead would come, as a 3-pointer by Anderson's Shelby Shaffer would cut the Transylvania advantage to seven.

But, the Pioneers refused to be rattled. Just 12 seconds later, Webb netted a two-point jumper, followed quickly by a layup by Coffman to push the lead back to 11, 61-50.

In the final six minutes, the Pioneers would capture their 19th win with clutch, confident shooting, extending their lead to 24, the largest of the contest, with 45 seconds left on the clock. Despite two last minute shots, Transylvania remained victorious, 85-66.

Transylvania made it hard for Anderson to recover on defense, netting many of their points in transition. Though only 5-for-18 from behind the arc, the Pioneers relied on their 50 percent shooting from the field, and work in the paint, to dictate the 19-point win.

Transylvania (19-2, 13-1 HCAC), who remains atop the Heartland Conference standings, looks for vengeance against conference-foe Franklin on Wednesday, Feb. 12 after dropping their only conference loss at home to the Grizzlies on Jan. 22. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
