LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania baseball celebrated Senior Day amongst a large crowd Saturday, but failed to find its offensive footing in the finale of the three-game series against Rose Hulman, falling 16-7 and 5-0.
It was a tough day for the Pioneers' bats, as Transylvania struggled to spark an offensive rally in either matchup. Sophomore
Trey Simpson and senior
Sam Liggett combined for the little scoring the Pioneers' were able to create, as Simpson went 2-for-7, scoring one run, two RBI and a walk while Liggett went 2-for-8, plating three RBI on the day.
Game one leaned heavily in favor of the Engineers from the opening two frames, as Rose-Hulman managed a 5-0 advantage by the end of the second inning. Transylvania first saw the scoreboard in the third, thanks to
Zach Riney's patience at the plate. After receiving a lead-off walk in the bottom of the third, Riney advanced on a ground out, and stole second, moving into ideal scoring position from third as
Hunter Jones approached the plate. A sacrifice fly to right field sailed across the first run, cutting the Engineer deficit to 5-1.
Whatever momentum the Pioneers' may have gained was halted in the top of the forth by the Engineers. An issued walk by pitcher
Shelby Dixon was capped on both ends by outs, giving the Pioneers only one out away from heading into the bottom of the frame. However, a stolen base and a second issued walk put two on with two out. An unfortunate error by Transylvania second baseman
Kody Ross advanced the runners to second and third. Rose-Hulman's Caleb Kissel, who had a strong outing against the Pioneers, smacked a single to center field, allowing two to score. The hit sparked a single and double, while a wild pitch also advaned runners, scoring three more runs for the Engineers. By the end of the fourth, Rose-Hulman was leading 10-2.
In the bottom of the frame, Transylvania attempted to find life, scoring two off a sacrifice fly and groundout, cutting the Engineer lead to 10-3.
A quick loss of focus resulted in the fifth inning of a long ball by the Engineers, giving them an 11-3 advantage. The Pioneers' final run of the game would be plated in the seventh, nearly repeating the success of the earlier first inning. In the same manner, Riney led off with a walk, advancing on the following single by
Zach Bynum and walk by Jones. With bases loaded, Simpson notched a two RBI doubled to left center, taking the Engineer lead to 11-7.
Transylvania was unable to comeback in the final innings, but allowed another four runs to cross home plate for Rose-Hulman in the top of the eighth, eventually falling 16-7.
Game two silenced any offense Transylvania was able to muster, shutting the Pioneers' out in nine inninger, 5-0. Scoring for Rose-Hulman would appear in the third, fifth, and eighth inning, continually shutting down Transylvania's many attempts to rally.
The three-game loss drops Transylvania in the Heartland Conference standings tied for sixth place with Earlham College at 10-11 in conference play.
Transylvania will finish their season on the road with visits to Hanover on Tuesday at 4 p.m., followed by a three-game series next weekend at Manchester.
