LEXINGTON, Ky.— The Transylvania University women's golf team posted a second place finish in the first event of the 2014 season Friday.
The event marked the first under Keilly Purdom as head coach. Purdom coached the Pioneers in the final two events of the 2013-14 while serving as interim head coach.
"I am pleased with how hard the team has worked during the past two weeks of preseason," Purdom said. "They have put so much effort into working on the mechanics of the game and coming together as a team in both mind and spirit."
The Transylvania Intercollegiate was held at the University Club of Kentucky, a 5,808-yard par 71 course. Hanover College, Centre College, Mount St. Joseph University and Thomas More College also participated.
2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion, Hanover College, won the team event, as Centre College's Alyssa Brown led the way in individual play finishing nine over par.
"I am proud of the team runner-up finish at our first event," Purdom said. "This is the first step in the journey for success in October and for our run for the conference championship. Now, we switch focus to our next event at Centre and continue to improve during the season."
The Pioneers return to action Sept. 4 to compete in the Jim English Centre Invitational.
