WITTENBERG, Ohio.—Despite an early goal by freshman midfielder Lindsey Sizemore, the Transylvania University women's soccer team dropped their Thursday night match with Wittenberg University, 2-1.
Sizemore's goal in the seventh minute proved to be the only offense the Pioneers could muster against a stout Wittenberg Tigers defense. Transy managed to take 10 shots in the match but only put five on goal, making it an easy night for Wittenberg goalkeeper Alexa Murrietta.
The same could not be said, however, for Transylvania goalie Morgan Potts. Despite a strong performance that included 10 saves, Potts relinquished two goals in the first half. The Tigers' scores came in the tenth and 31st minutes by forward Kate Burns and defender Michelle Brunswick, respectively. Both Wittenberg goals were assisted by Chelsey Marcum.
The Pioneers' defense was stretched thin and pressured all night, resulting in 25 shot attempts for Wittenberg, 12 of which were on target. The Tigers' offense was aided by their seven corner kicks in the match; both of their goals were scored off corners.
For Transylvania, Sizemore led the way offensively with five shot attempts and three shots on goal. Senior forward Alyssa Kruse also managed to put two of her three shot attempts on goal.
With the loss, Transylvania's record drops to 2-4-0. They travel to Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday for a rematch of their 2013 NCAA tournament opening round game.
