Box Score DEFIANCE, Ohio—An early goal and lead was not enough for the Transylvania University men's soccer team to pull out a win against the homestanding Defiance College Yellow Jackets. The Pioneers dominated the game and kept the pressure on the Jackets, but a timely goal from Defiance dealt Transy a 1-1 draw in double overtime.
Transylvania opened the game strongly as midfielder Riley Calhoon scored off an assist from midfielder Freddie Siegelman just five minutes into the game to give the Pioneers a one-goal advantage that they would carry into the locker room after 45 minutes of play.
An opportunistic offense from the Yellow Jackets capitalized on a momentary slip from the Transy defense and beat goalkeeper Cody Waltrip for a game-tying score just four minutes into the second half. The Pioneers would challenge and press forward for much of the remaining time, but they struggled to make the best of several good scoring opportunities, sending the game into overtime.
During the first overtime period, Transylvania created a steady flow of offense, but were unable to come up with the winning-goal in the sudden death overtime. Midfielder Blake Chidester put a shot on goal in the 95th minute but it was saved by the Defiance goalie. The Pioneers best scoring chance came at the 98:33 mark with a shot off the foot of midfielder Jacob Gantt, but it hit the post and bounced away from danger. In the second overtime, Transy continued its aggressive offensive approach but were turned away time and time again.
In the match, Transylvania took 29 shots with nine on target. Calhoon's lone goal was one of eight shots on the day for him to lead the Pioneers. Defensively, Waltrip recorded three saves on four shots.
Transylvania returns to action on Wednesday with a home contest against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Mount St. Joseph at 7:00pm.
