Box Score ANDERSON, Ind.—A 103rd minute goal from defender Megan Wall gave the Transylvania University women's soccer team a 2-1 double-overtime victory over host Anderson University on Saturday. With the win, the Pioneers clinch the four seed in the upcoming Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
In what proved to be a defensively driven game, the Pioneers prevailed in the end, thanks in large part to goalkeeper Morgan Potts. In over 102 minutes of play, Potts stopped five of six shots on target from the Ravens, giving Transylvania the boost they needed to pull out the victory.
The score would hold at 0-0 for nearly the entirety of the match, with neither team able to crack into the scoring column in the first half and most of the second period. That scoreless draw was broken at the 76:49 mark by Anderson, giving them a late lead.
The Pioneers were not deterred, however, as they continued to battle back and press forward with their offense, looking to even the score. The break they needed came in the 86th minute when midfielder Charlotte Pruet took a pass from her fellow midfielder Noel Obata, and netted a goal to even the score.
In the first overtime period, Transy was the aggressor, taking several shots in the opening minutes and continuing to apply pressure to the Anderson goalie. After being unable to net the winning score in the original 10-minute overtime, the Pioneers came out swinging in the second overtime and defender Megan Wall fielded a pass from Lindsey Sizemore and worked her way into a good position and ripped a shot past the outstretched arms of the Anderson goalie, giving the Pioneers the win.
"We put in a gutsy performance today and fought off a feisty Anderson team and we are just happy to be on the winning side of this one," said head coach Michael Fulton. "It was an all-around team effort and to come from behind to win is a sign that we have matured and improved over the season."
All told, Transy took 16 shots in the contest and put nine on goal. They were led by midfielder Morgan Janes' six shot attempts, three of which were on target. The Pioneers defensive unit played a strong game as well, holding the Ravens to just six shots on goal by limiting their clean looks at the net.
The win guarantees the Pioneers (7-8-2, 5-3-1 HCAC) the fourth seed in the conference tournament. Transylvania will play their opening round game at Hanover College on Wednesday at 2:00pm.
