Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Transylvania University field hockey team saw its season draw to a close with a loss in the Southern Athletic Association tournament semifinals Saturday, falling to host Rhodes College 8-0.
Looking to avenge a loss to the Lynx in their final regular season match of the season, the Pioneers had to contend with a full roster from Rhodes that constantly cycled in fresh players. In addition to the sheer volume of players, the Rhodes lineup was comprised of 17 upperclass players who demonstrated a great understanding of team play, recording five assists on their eight goals.
Transylvania goalkeeper Allyson Benz played 53 minutes in goal, recording four saves and allowing five goals. Sidney Lococo played the final 17 minutes in the cage, allowing three goals but picking up three saves along the way.
Offensively, the Pioneers managed just two shots, one from midfielder Jessica Chandler and one from midfielder Caroline Patrick. Both shot attempts from Transy came in a three minute stretch in the opening period, with Chandler pushing a shot wide in the 27th minute followed by a shot on goal from Patrick in the 30th minute to cap the offensive efforts from Transylvania in the match.
A healthy and well-conditioned defense from Rhodes cut off passing lanes for the Pioneers and applied constant ball pressure, making it difficult for Transy to develop an offensive attack on a consistent basis.
The loss marks the end of the season for the Pioneers with a record of 2-14.
