Slow fourth quarter halts Pioneers at home versus Rose

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers made use of a strong second half performance to defeat the Transylvania women's basketball team 60-51 on Saturday afternoon at the Beck Center.

The Pioneers now move to 5-3 overall, and 2-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play after Saturday's loss.

Sophomore Celia Kline led the scoring effort for Transylvania by scoring 13 points, 10 of which came in the first half. The game was Kline's third in a row of 10 points or more and her seventh of the season.

Kline was joined in double figures by freshman teammate Shelby Boyle who scored 11 points on the day. Boyle was 3-for-5 from beyond the three-point line and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

The Pioneers also received a strong performance from sophomore guard Taylor Jackson, who added 10 points and three steals in the losing effort.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair that saw Rose-Hulman jump out to a quick 10-3 lead five minutes into the game. Transylvania would answer with a strong run of their own as the Pioneers outscored the Fightin' Engineers 11-3 over the next five minutes, leading to a 14-14 tie heading into the second quarter.

The game continued to grow increasingly physical in the second quarter, and the Pioneers made use of great defense to jump out to a quick 22-16 lead thanks to the trio of Boyle, Kline and junior Carlee Clemons, who combined for eight of the first nine points in the quarter.

Using stifling defense and sharp outside shooting, Transylvania took a 30-25 lead into the halftime break. The Pioneers outshot the Engineers five to zero from beyond the arc, while shooting 42% from the field in the first half.

Transylvania's shooters went cold in the third quarter, as the defensive pressure from both teams intensified. The two teams traded buckets throughout the quarter, ending with Transylvania holding onto a 42-41 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter proved to be Rose-Hulman's, as it held Transylvania to 23 percent shooting from the field, while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field themselves. The Fightin' Engineers scored the first nine points of the quarter to take a 50-42 lead with five minutes remaining in the game.

Jackson did her best to keep Transylvania in the game late, as she added two 3-point buckets in the final five minutes of the game. However, the Pioneers failed to secure enough defensive stops in the game's waning moments, leading to a 60-51 Rose-Hulman victory.

Next up, the Pioneers travel down I-64 to Louisville to face the Spalding Golden Eagles on Tuesday, December 20, in what will be the team's final game before Christmas. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
