Box Score Louisville, Ky. – The 3-point shot was alive and well once more for the Transylvania women's basketball team as it hit 15 triples en route to a 70-55 win against the Spalding University Eagles on Tuesday night at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
Sophomore guard Celia Kline paced the Pioneers with nearly half of the outside production, hitting seven three-pointers, making it the second time the guard has hit seven or more from outside in a game this season. The sophomore registered a game-high 23 points to aid the Pios' scoring punch.
Entering the game as the conference leader in three-point shooting, the Pioneers once again staked their claim to that reputation, knocking down 15 of 33 attempts from beyond the arc.
Transylvania began to discover its 3-point touch in the first quarter, sinking four of nine attempts as its carved a 17-14 lead after 10 minutes of battle. Freshman guard Shelby Boyle led the team in triples after one quarter with two, while Kline and sophomore guard Taylor Jackson each hit one apiece from outdoors.
Transylvania outscored Spalding 17 to 8 in the second quarter to take control of the contest, heading into halftime with a 34-22 halftime lead. The Pioneers shot 6-for-14 from the floor in the quarter, but 4-for-8 from the 3-point line to make ends meet.
While Spalding outscored the Pioneers 23-20 in the third quarter, Kline found her stroke as she knocked down four 3-pointers in the quarter and shot 5-for-8 overall from the floor for an electric 14-point quarter.
Transylvania put the defensive clamps upon Spalding in the fourth quarter, holding the Eagles to just 10 points while scoring 16 points. While the three-point shooting cooled off for the Pioneers in the final 10 minutes, Transylvania used a 9-1 run in the first five minutes of the quarter to fully pull away.
The Pioneers also showed off their size in the paint, outrebounding Spalding 41-36, and spread around the basketball with a 17-assist night. Boyle and Jackson joined Kline in scoring double-figures as the freshman had 13 points and Jackson added 14. Jackson had another solid all-around line of 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals in 28 minutes of work.
While Spalding won a one-sided scoring battle in the paint, the Pioneers outscored the home team by 45 to nine in the 3-point category.
The Pioneers complete gameplay for the week as they pause for a brief holiday break before returning to action next Thursday, December 29 for the Pat Deacon Classic in Lexington. The Pioneers will host Dubuque on Thursday to commence the home tournament.
