Box Score Terre Haute, Ind. - A fourth quarter comeback fell just shy of completion, as the Transylvania women's basketball team fell to the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers, 76-71 on Saturday afternoon at the Hulbert Arena.
Sophomore guard Kristen Hayes led the Pioneers in scoring with a season high 22 points. Hayes shot the ball efficiently, going 8-for-12 from the floor, and 3-for-5 from three-point range.
Hayes was joined in double figures by freshman guard Shelby Boyle and junior forward Rachel Cox, who added 14 and 17 points respectively in the Pioneers loss.
The Pioneers continued their recent streak of prolific shooting, as they outshot the Fightin' Engineers 49 to 41 percent from the field. Transylvania also shot 52 percent from three-point range in comparison to only 20 percent for Rose-Hulman.
Turnovers were the Pioneers shortcoming on the day, as they gave up the ball 20 times in the game. The Fightin' Engineers used these turnovers to score 36 points, which eventually proved to be too much to overcome for the Pioneers.
As the game began, both teams exhibited their desire to win and the overall importance of the matchup in regards to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, as they traded blows throughout the first quarter of play, leading to a score of 13-11 in favor of the home team with 3:22 remaining.
But over the remainder of the quarter, the Fightin' Engineers went on an 11-0 run, which pushed their lead to 24-11 over the Pioneers going into the second quarter.
Rose-Hulman continued to control the pace of play throughout the second quarter, forcing Transylvania into six turnovers in the quarter. A pair of three-pointers from Boyle helped Transylvania trim the deficit to eight points at the half.
Late in the fourth quarter Transylvania looked to make one final push, as a Cox layup cut the Rose-Hulman lead to 69-63 with 1:27 remaining in the game. However, the Fightin' Engineers would hold strong down the stretch as they pulled out the 76-71 result.
Transylvania's record now stands at 13-4 overall, and 7-3 in conference play. The loss to Rose-Hulman ended the Pioneers' eight-game winning streak, their longest since the 2014-15 season.
Next up, the Pioneers will look to get back to their winning ways as they return home to face the Earlham College Quakers on Wednesday night, January 25. Gametime is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Clive M. Beck Center.
