Pioneers pull away in second half against Anderson for ninth HCAC victory

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. –The Transylvania women's basketball team used a barrage of 3-point baskets to defeat a shorthanded Anderson University Ravens team by the score of 81 to 54 at the Beck Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers were once again led in scoring by sophomore guard Celia Kline, who continues to have an outstanding season. Kline scored 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and a sweltering 6-of-11 afternoon from beyond the 3-point line. The game was Kline's fourth 20-point performance of the season.

Junior forward Rachel Cox also had a strong showing for the Pioneers, as she added 15 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes of action.

Transylvania opened up the game on a tear as they used four made 3-pointers to jump out to an early 12-2 lead with six minutes remaining in the quarter. As a team, the Pioneers went 5-for-8 from 3-point range in the quarter.

The second quarter was something of a back and forth affair, as the Pioneers jumped out to their largest lead of the half at 28-9 on a Cox layup with 8:13 remaining. But a late run by the Ravens cut the Pioneers lead to just eight points at the half.

The second half started off with neither team being able to find the basket. The collective shooting slump ended when Kline drained a pull-up 3-pointer at the 7:48 mark. The missed shots were quickly forgotten, as the Pioneers went on a 9-2 run, keyed by five points from freshman guard Ashton Woodard. The quarter was capped off by yet another Kline 3-pointer, taking the lead to 62-38 in favor of Transylvania.

The Pioneer's reserves saw extended playing time in the fourth quarter, as Transylvania extended its advantage to the final score of 81-54.

In addition to the team's outstanding 3-point shooting, the Pioneers were also a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line in the victory.

Today's victory moves Transylvania's record to 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers maintain their hold on third place in the conference standings with six games remaining in the regular season.

Next, the Pioneers will travel to Hanover, Indiana to face the Hanover College Panthers in a primetime matchup with post-season implications for both programs. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Horner Health and Recreation Center.
