Transylvania field hockey achieves SAA 3-seed with Senior Day win vs Sewanee

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania field hockey team wrapped up its regular season with a rousing 4-0 victory over the Sewanee University Tigers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Played in the driving rain, the match served as the Senior Day celebration for the Pioneers' lone senior, midfielder Jessica Chandler, who was honored in a ceremony prior to the game.

"I feel incredibly blessed and immensely proud of my team today," said Chandler. "In my four years of field hockey at Transy, I have never been so excited to be out on the field with a group of girls. While I am still in denial that it is my last season, there is nothing I would change about my experience here."

With the win, Transylvania's final regular season record stands at 7-10 overall and 3-3 in Southern Athletic Association play. The Pioneers' record moves them to third place in the final conference standings, the best result in program history. With their seventh win of the season, the Pioneers eclipsed last year's season total of six wins.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead as Chandler made her move towards the goal and scored just 14 minutes into the game for the early one-goal margin.

Then at the 20:52 mark, a pass from freshman midfielder Audrey Denham found the stick of sophomore forward Zoe Jessie who blasted a shot past the Sewanee goalkeeper to extend the Pioneer lead to 2-0 going into halftime.

The Pioneers continued to dominate throughout the second half, as a pair of goals from sophomore midfielders Tori Coleman and Taylor Insley extended the final tally to 4-0 in favor of the Pioneers.

Junior goalkeeper Allyson Benz concluded a strong regular season as she recorded three saves in the victory and earned the Pioneers' fourth shutout of the season.

Benz currently ranks second in the SAA in both saves with 128, and in save percentage with a mark of .795 on the season.

Transylvania Head Coach Sarah Humphries was pleased with her team's efforts on Sunday. "We are really proud of the game we put together today," remarked Humphries. "We won each half, controlled the game right from the start, and corrected our mistakes as we went. This is great momentum that we can use moving into the conference tournament. We are happy we got to celebrate our senior day with such a commanding victory. It was a full team effort all around."

Up next, the No. 3 seed Pioneers will travel to Memphis, Tennessee on Friday, November 3 to face the No. 6 seed Hendrix College Warriors in the SAA quarterfinals. The matchup between the Pioneers and Warriors is set to start at 3:00 p.m. Central Daylight Savings Time, with the winner moving on to the semifinals on Saturday.
