Terre Haute, Ind. – A shorthanded Transylvania men's tennis team faced the best that the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference had to offer, as it fell 9-0 to the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers on Saturday afternoon.
The Saturday match threw the Pioneers right into the gauntlet in its HCAC conference opener; the Fightin' Engineers are currently undefeated in conference play, and hold an overall record of 9-5 on the season
After falling behind early in the matchup, Transylvania junior J.T. Henderson provided the Pioneers with a bright spot, as he played a strong second set, before falling 6-0, 6-4 in No. 5 singles.
Despite the lopsided scores, Transylvania head coach Kevin Calhoun remains confident in his team's progress.
"I'm pleased with today's match, even though we took one on the chin," said Calhoun. "Rose-Hulman is the standard in the HCAC right now and there's a reason for that, but my men fought and played hard. Our process is underway and the results will come."
The Pioneers will continue their road trip, as they travel to face the in-state rival Berea Mountaineers on Monday, April 3. The match is set to start at 5:00 at Berea College.
