Pioneers tennis endures tough Saturday test at Defiance

Defiance, OH. – A shorthanded Transylvania men's tennis team continued its trek through a taxing Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule as the Pioneers fell 9-0 to the Defiance Yellow Jackets at the Dix Tennis facility on Saturday morning.

The match got off to a rocky start for the Pioneers, as they dropped both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, before being forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match.

In No. 1 singles, Transylvania junior Luke Groene turned in the Pioneers' best showing of the day with a hard-fought first set, as he battled to a 5-7, 2-6 loss at the hands of Defiance's James DeMeo.

However, the Pioneers were unable to build any momentum off of that singles match, as they subsequently dropped matches at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles in straight sets.

Transylvania's depth issue returned to bite the Pioneers, as they were forced to forfeit No. 5 and No. 6 singles because of a lack of available athletes.

The Pioneers will now return home as they prepare to face the Anderson University Ravens on Saturday, April 22. The match, which is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start, will also serve as Transylvania's senior day celebration for outgoing seniors Eli Hack and Hussain Siddiqui.
