Hanover, Ind. – The Transylvania men's tennis team accelerated into the Zeddies Tennis Center Tuesday afternoon with aspirations for victory against the Hanover College Panthers, but suffered a 9-0 defeat on a strong singles showing by the host team.
The Pioneers came out firing in three pairs of doubles matches that opened up the afternoon. The duo of senior Eli Hack and junior Eric Sandknop pushed Landon Carrico and Dakota Smith to the brink before the Hanover pair finished off an 8-5 win in the pro-set.
Hanover cruised to an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles and an 8-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles match before play moved forward to singles action.
It was the Panthers who gained momentum throughout the singles matches and junior Luke Groene was sent back in No. 1 singles by Landon Carrico, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Esteban Favetto gave Drake Clohessy a run in the second set of their No. 4 singles match before Clohessy pulled away with a 6-1, 6-4 win.
Junior Daniel Cooper picked up four games in No. 6 singles against Mitchell Minniear, but it was Minniear who eventually forged a 6-3, 6-1 victory to close out the day.
The Pioneers return to the court one more time in 2017 as they visit the Manchester University Spartans on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.
