Transylvania baseball learns lessons against Webster and North Park on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Sauget, Ill. – The Transylvania baseball team wrapped up a three-game set at the GCS Ballpark in the St. Louis metro with a 12-1 defeat to the Webster University Gorloks and an 11-1 loss to the North Park University Vikings on Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers completed a fruitful early-season nonconference trip to the Gateway with a big win Saturday against Benedictine before testing themselves against a pair of veteran Midwest programs in Webster and North Park.

In Sunday's morning opener against Webster, the Gorloks challenged freshman starter Nick Craddock to the tune of 10 earned runs, one walk issued, and two strikeouts. Webster tallied one run in the first inning, two in the second, and three in the third inning to assert a 6-0 advantage.

The Gorloks busted out for a six-run fifth inning before Transylvania answered back in the top of the sixth inning with its lone run of the game; sophomore infielder David McAnelly powered a solo home run shot into right field for Transylvania's run.

With Transy trailing 12-1 after seven innings, the 10-run rule was invoked to bring the game to a close.

Freshman infielder Hudson Chastain was responsible for the Pios' other hit in the game.

In the second game of the day for the Pioneers, Transylvania again endured a heavy scoring load by its opponent in the opening innings as North Park took an 11-1 victory. The Vikings tabbed two runs in the first inning and five more in the second inning to knock freshman starter Jake Schmidt out of the game.

Three others pitchers for Transy saw work on the hill as sophomore pitcher Collin Johnson worked 2.2 innings, freshman Luke Wilson went 1.1 innings, and Robert Young closed the final 2.2 innings of the game. Young led the quartet with three strikeouts.

Transylvania scored its lone run against North Park as sophomore catcher Cole Ratliff scored on a passed ball in the top of the eighth inning.

Ratliff and senior outfielder Isaac Taylor led Transylvania with two hits apiece. Ratliff contributed a double and a triple to finish his weekend in St. Louis strong.

Transylvania is back in action this Tuesday for its home opener at Marquard Field in Lexington against the Spalding University Eagles. Previously scheduled for Wednesday, the home opener has been moved back 24 hours to a 3:00 p.m. start to avoid forecasted flurries for the midweek.
