Box Score Sewanee, Tenn. – The Transylvania field hockey team witnessed the dominant play of the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops on Sunday afternoon as the Bishops dealt the Pioneers a 7-0 defeat at Puett Field on the campus of Sewanee: University of the South.
Taking to the field less than a day after playing a season-opening Saturday night game against Eastern Mennonite which was delayed by inclement weather conditions, the Pioneers had to turnaround quickly for an early Sunday match against Ohio Wesleyan to wrap up their first weekend of official action.
Transylvania weathered a torrent of early shots as the Bishops converted two goals inside the first five minutes of play. The Pioneers settled in defensively for the rest of the first half, holding the Bishops scoreless for the next 26 minutes. The Pioneers' best chance to score came in the 25th minute as Ellie Domato's delivery on a penalty corner was blocked, maintaining a crucial 2-0 advantage for the Bishops.
Ohio Wesleyan continued to hold the advantage in possession and cashed in just before the halftime break to go up 3-0. The Bishops' rhythm continued in the second half as Ohio Wesleyan tacked on four more goals for the shutout victory.
Transylvania senior goalie Allyson Benz spent the afternoon trying to keep the Pioneers stout defensively as she collected 18 saves on the day, her second-most amount of single-game saves in her four-year career.
The Pioneers continue their challenging season-opening five-game road trip next Saturday, September 8 as they venture to Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. nonconference match at the Austin E. Knowlton Complex.
