Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Sewanee gains decisive early goals against Transylvania to hold off Pioneers

Sewanee, Tenn. – The Transylvania field hockey team waged another close contest with the Sewanee Tigers on Sunday afternoon, but the Tigers reeled off a 2-0 win against the Pioneers at Puett Field in their second meeting in as many days.

The loss drops the Pioneers to 0-13 on the year after Sunday's nonconference contest while the Tigers move to 3-6 on the season.

Sewanee jumped on the Pioneers early as they scored in the seventh and 12th minute to earn a 2-0 advantage after the first period of action. Transylvania nearly tied up the game in the ninth minute through a penalty corner from Emily Long. After taking the corner herself, Long cut back into the action and fired a shot that was dragged wide, minutes before Sewanee found a two-goal cushion.

The Pioneer defense stood strong for the remainder of the game allowing no further goals to Sewanee over the final three periods. Libby Bringard proved to be vital for the Pioneers by collecting seven saves on the nine shots she faced.

The Pioneers will hit the road next weekend for another two-game set against the Concordia University Falcons in Mequon, Wisconsin. The first game is scheduled to begin on Saturday, October 16th at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time at Tomasini Stadium.
