Eagles fly past Pioneers in nonconference showdown

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania field hockey team fell to the University of Mary Washington Eagles, 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium.

The loss drops the Pioneers to 0-10 on the year and 0-1 in conference play, while the win boosts the Eagles' record to 6-3 on the season.

The shorthanded Pioneers took on the Eagles in a Saturday nonconference match at home. The Pioneers stood strong on defense but the Eagles were able to score three goals in the opening period to jump out to a quick lead.

Though the Pioneers continue to hold firm, opportunities to counterattack were rare as the Eagles put Transylvania on the defensive for most of the afternoon.

The Pioneers continued to fight in the final two periods, but the numbers advantage saw the Eagles score four more goals to complete the scoring at 8-0 as the final whistle blew.

Sidney Varney showed strength in goal by collecting a season-high 12 saves in only three periods of action for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers look to bounce back tomorrow, October 3, in a home matchup against the DePauw University Tigers. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM at Pat Deacon Stadium.
