Lexington, Ky. - The Transylvania Field Hockey team fought closely with the Depauw University Tigers before falling in a 2-0 loss at Pat Deacon Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Â
In their second game of the weekend, the Pioneers held firm through a multitude of defensive corners against the Tigers as goalie
Sidney Varney racked up three saves before Depauw's first goal early in the second quarter.
Â
The game's dynamic shifted when a lightning delay occurred at halftime of the contest, forcing a pause in the game of nearly an hour and a half before the teams could resume action.
Â
Transylvania maintained its energy as the third quarter began, coasting off of an early shot attempt by sophomore Captain
Catherine Harney. The Pioneers continued their venture into their attacking 25 with powerful hits from
Kayla Bushman and
Makenna Saward, finding another shot on goal by Harney as the Pioneers still only trailed 1-0 at the end of the third quarter in pursuit of an equalizer.
Â
Capitalizing off of their third quarter momentum, the Pioneers contended aggressively against the Tigers, fending off shots on cage before giving way to a goal by the Tigers with 12 minutes left in the half.
Â
Varney drew two more saves toward the end of the final quarter, blocking off the Tigers last attempts at scoring. Despite their defensive connectedness, the Pioneers were unable to find a goal the rest of the way as Depauw held on for the two-goal victory. Depauw moved its record to 2-6 while the Pioneers dropped to 0-11 overall.
Â
Transylvania now looks ahead to its next match on Saturday, October 9th as the Pioneers face off against the Sewanee Tigers. The match is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time start from Puett Field in Sewanee, Tennessee to resume Southern Athletic Association play.
