9/11/2021 11:34:00 PM

Nicholasville, Ky. – The Transylvania men's tennis team commenced the 2021-22 season on Saturday at Top Seed Tennis Club in an all-day marathon, welcoming the Asbury University Eagles, Wittenberg University Tigers, and the Wabash College Little Giants.

The teams served up the first of two days of round robin-style action at Top Seed with the Pioneers taking on regional neighbor Asbury and Wittenberg in singles action, and topping off the day with four doubles matches against Wabash.

Asbury prevailed over the Pioneers, 7-0 in the opening singles session on Saturday. Transylvania angled for redemption against Wittenberg but the Tigers also were up to the task, taking all seven matches from the Pioneers in the later singles matchup. Nick McNamee battled John Devito tightly in the marquee matchup, falling 7-5 in the first set before Devito found traction to win 6-0 and wrap up the match in two sets. Jacob Cooper fought Ethan Libby in another classic before falling 6-4, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (5) in a singles battle that went the distance.

The Pioneers issued revenge in the form of a four-match sweep versus Wabash in a doubles competition to end the day. Arjun Gupta teamed with Eli Skaggs to win in No. 1 doubles, 8-7 (5). McNamee and John Michael Schulte followed suit with an 8-2 win, while Cooper and Jared Wells teamed up to collect an 8-6 win. Hunter Gregg and Jack Kaufer rounded out the perfect doubles showing with an 8-4 victory.

The Pioneers continue gameplay tomorrow for the final day of action at Top Seed Tennis Club, with a forecasted 11:00 a.m. start.
