Springfield, Ohio – The Transylvania field hockey team was unable to thin the gap from the Wittenberg University Tigers after a two-goal margin at halftime, falling 6-0 in the nonconference matchup on Wednesday night at Edwards-Maurer Field.
After an early-minute goal by the Tigers, Transylvania held firm throughout the rest of the first half, only conceding a goal three minutes into the second quarter that saw the Tigers notch a 2-0 advantage. The Pioneers denied the Tigers a majority of quality scoring opportunities in the first half with a series of blocks on opening tries by Wittenberg in the second quarter.
The Tigers created breathing room in the third quarter with a pair of goals, and added two late goals in the fourth quarter to create the final margin of victory.
Facing 18 shots on goal in the match, Libby Bringard provided another strong showing as the final line of defense, racking up 11 saves on the evening, her second-highest amount of goals in a match. Grace Smilek aided the Transylvania back line with a defensive save in the contest, denying the Tigers a good chance off of a third-quarter penalty corner.
Wittenberg improved to 5-4 on the year after sweeping the home and home series against the Pioneers while Transy dropped to 0-9 on the season.
Transylvania looks to bounce back this weekend at home as the Pioneers host the University of Mary Washington Eagles at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday, October 2. The nonconference match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start. for the first of two home contests this weekend in Lexington.
