Box Score Lexington, Ky. – The No. 4 Transylvania women's basketball team showed off an instant display of familiar rhythm in a 75-42 victory over the Wilmington College Quakers on Wednesday night at the Beck Center.
Transylvania strengthened its overall record to 11-0 on the season while Wilmington dropped to 5-8 overall.
Madison Kellione led a balanced attack as one of four double-digit scorers on the Pioneers with a game-high 15 points to go with four assists and a steal.
Wednesday's nonconference matchup marked the first time the Pioneers took the court in over three weeks due to a successive string of opponents being sidelined because of covid protocols.
Originally scheduled to play conference member Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday, Transylvania's matchup against the Lions was the fourth straight game for the Pioneers to be cancelled. With Wilmington also having a conference game cancelled on Wednesday, the teams quickly converged to play one another.
There were few signs of rust for the Pioneers despite their long respite, who jumped out to a double-digit lead after the first quarter and continued their hustle from there; the Pioneers shot a sizzling 59 percent in the first half, buoyed by 6 for 9 team shooting from behind the arc.
The Pioneers built a commanding 63-32 lead after three quarters, holding the Quakers to just four points over the first nine and a half minutes of the second half. Transylvania finished the night with high urgency and efficiency, shooting 50 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter to top off a 57 percent night overall. Transy shot 53 percent from outside as six different Pioneers hit a triple; Kellione led the attack from outside with a 3 for 5 figure on threes.
Dasia Thornton tallied 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists while hitting on 5 of 8 field goals. Kennedi Stacy aided the early burst with nine of her 13 points in the first quarter and hit 6 of 8 field goal attempts. Grace Shope turned in another all-around performance with a game-high eight rebounds, nine points, one assist, and one steal on 50 percent shooting from the floor.
Samantha Cornelison nailed 2 of 4 treys to add 10 points off the bench for the Pioneers along with two rebounds.
Transylvania continued its string of dominance as the 33-point win was its fifth of the season by 30 or more points.
Transylvania is next scheduled to play this Saturday, January 15 on the road at conference opponent Anderson University. Tip-off between Transylvania and Anderson is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium on the campus of Anderson University.
