Anderson, Ind. – The No. 4 Transylvania women's basketball team unleashed a defensive clinic to cruise to a 68-36 win over the Anderson University Ravens on Saturday afternoon at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
The Pioneers improved to 12-0 on the season and 4-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play while the Ravens fell to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Madison Kellione scored a game-high 24 points for the Pioneers on an efficient line of 7 for 9 shooting from the floor; the junior hit all three of her 3-point attempts and went 7 of 8 from the free throw line to spur an offense that complemented an unrelenting defense. Anderson's 36-point output on Saturday marked the fewest points in a game this season by a Pioneer opponent.
Dasia Thornton had an impressive two-way performance with a career-high 12 rebounds on the way to her second double-double of the season on 10 points and an assist.
Kennedi Stacy added 12 points and seven rebounds as part of a monstrous showing on the boards by Transy; the Pioneers outrebounded the Ravens 54-30 on Saturday.
Transylvania allowed the Ravens minimal quality opportunities on offense in the opening quarter, holding Anderson to 1 for 18 shooting from the field to take a 12-2 lead after the first quarter.
Kellione heated up in the second quarter with back to back triples as part of nine straight points to reach 13 points by halftime. Thornton nearly collected a double-double in the first half alone, notching 10 points and eight rebounds by the halftime break as Transy held a 31-13 stronghold.
The Pioneers displayed their physicality on defense and on the boards, outrebounding the Ravens 30-18 in the first half of play and limiting Anderson to 15 percent shooting (5 for 33) from the field in the first half.
Anderson could find few answers in the second half, shooting 3 for 13 from the field in the third quarter and 4 for 12 in the final quarter.
Transylvania's 54 rebounds were also a season-high. Saturday's win continued a string of dominance for the Pioneers, who won their third straight game and sixth of the season overall by 30 or more points.
The Pioneers will look to continue their season-best start on the road next Wednesday, January 19 at the Hanover College Panthers in Hanover, Indiana. The rematch of the last two HCAC Championship games is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start from Collier Arena.
