Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Transylvania begins Logan Otto era with season-opening win at Marietta

Marietta, Ohio - The Transylvania men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season on the road Saturday with a ferocious welcome, taking a 14-8 win over the Marietta College Pioneers at Don Drumm Stadium.

After a five-goal debut in last year's season opener, sophomore Andrew Hamill repeated the feat to lead the Pioneers attack on Saturday. The reigning HCLC Newcomer of the Year, Hamill once again scored five goals on just six shots on goal to begin his second season much like his first.

The Pioneers moved to 1-0 on the season for the first time under new head coach Logan Otto, who assumed head coaching duties from Terry Justice, the program's first ever head coach, during the offseason.

The first Transylvania strike of the year came courtesy of Quinn Fox, whose first of two goals came on the man advantage with an assist from Kayd Aquino.

After the teams battled to a 4-4 draw at halftime, the Pioneers came out blazing with three goals in the first two minutes of the third quarter to forge a 7-4 lead. Hamill took another Aquino pass and scored his third goal of the day 35 seconds into the half. After dishing out two assists, Aquino found the back of the net himself 27 seconds later for his first score of the season.

Just 10 seconds after Aquino's tally, Bryce Lowe added to the charge to put the Pioneers up by three goals to assume the lead for good. After Marietta narrowed the deficit to 8-6, the Pioneers answered with four straight goals culminating in Lowe's third and fourth strikes of the day.

The Pioneers finished the afternoon 22 for 24 on clears and took advantage of extra man opportunities by going 3 for 6 with a man up. On the defensive side, the Pioneers caused 23 turnovers. Midfielder Peyton Bray went 10 for 17 on face-offs and snatched eight out of the 40 total ground balls for the Pioneers.

Goalie Connor Haney picked up the win in goal and set a new career-high with nine saves while earning his first career win in goal.

The win makes Transylvania 2-0 all time against Marietta, after a 14-3 home win that kicked off the 2020 season. It also marks Transy's fourth straight season-opening victory.

The Pioneers come home to Lexington for their next game on Saturday, February 19 and will welcome the Wittenberg University Tigers to Pat Deacon Stadium for a 2:00 p.m. scheduled start.
