Transylvania men's lacrosse earn hard fought win in home opener over Wittenberg

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's lacrosse team notched their fourth straight home opening win, in a 12-9 triumph over the Wittenberg University Tigers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday.

The Pioneers offense was paced by standout performances from Bryce Lowe, Dalton Hubbs, and Kayd Aquino. Much like he did in the season opening win over Marietta College, Lowe had another four goal showing. His seven shots on goal were the most of anyone in the game. On top of Lowe's four tallies, Hubbs matched the feat with four of his own. A hat trick from Aquino made it 11 total goals out of the three Pioneers.

Both teams fought to establish control of the game throughout the first half, trading goals back and forth. At the 12-minute mark of the second quarter, Lowe buried back-to-back goals in a span of just 11 seconds to throw down a two goal lead. Wittenberg battled back to even the score, but an unassisted tally courtesy of Aquino gave him a first half hat trick, as well as the halftime lead for the Pioneers.

In a very physical second half, it was Hubbs who took over to lead Transylvania to the victory. Three of his four goals on the afternoon came in the second half. Freshman midfielder Tucker Strode won several key draws down the stretch to dash the comeback hopes of the Tigers.

The Pioneers were able to execute their transition game with near perfection, going 22-23 on clears. On the defensive side, they caused 14 total turnovers. Peyton Bray led the team in ground balls, grabbing nine on the day.

Goaltender Connor Haney moves to 2-0 on the season after another strong performance in goal. Haney made several crucial saves in the closing minutes to protect the Transylvania lead.

Up next for Transylvania, the Rhodes College Lynx come to town on Sunday, February 27 for a 1:00 p.m. scheduled start at Pat Deacon Stadium.
